What to Wear for Quad Biking at Atlantis Dunes
Quad Biking Cape Town guiding team · Updated 2026-08-04
Atlantis is bright, windy and sandy, often all at once. What you wear changes the ride more than most people expect — the difference between a great hour and a gritty, squinting one is usually a pair of goggles and closed shoes.

The non-negotiables
Closed shoes are essential. Sand gets hot, footpegs are metal, and open sandals are not permitted on the quads. Long trousers protect your legs from sun and from the fine sand that blows constantly across the dune field.
Helmets are provided and compulsory. Eye protection is the piece riders most often forget: sunglasses work, wrap-around goggles work better, especially on a windy afternoon.
- Closed, flat shoes — trainers are ideal
- Long trousers or leggings
- Sunglasses or goggles
- A light windproof jacket
- High-SPF sunscreen
- A buff or scarf for the fine sand
Dressing for the season
Summer at Atlantis means strong sun and the south-easter. Light long sleeves beat a vest, because reflected glare off white sand burns quickly. In winter the wind carries the Atlantic with it, so add a windproof outer layer and expect the sand to be firmer and colder.
Mornings are generally calmer than afternoons, which matters if wind bothers you or if you plan to take photographs.
What to leave behind
Loose scarves, dangling jewellery, hats without straps and anything that flaps can catch or blow away. Leave them in the car. Phones are best carried in a zipped pocket or handed to the guide at photo stops — fine sand and camera lenses do not mix.
Next step
Prices always include the compulsory reserve permit as a separate line, so the total you see is the total you pay.
